Flood Street Theater was located at 170 N 400 E, St. George, UT 84770. This was one of
my favorite places to visit as a child. My father worked as a fitter/welder at S and S Steel
in Hurricane, Utah and my family relied on a single income at that time. My parents
raised six children and we did not have a lot of money. Flood Street Theater was known
as the "Dollar Theater." It charged much cheaper ticket prices for movies that had
already exited the more expensive theaters. Because of the cheaper price, this was the
only theater my family went to as a child and it was always a treat for us. We loved
going to see the movies. I remember getting excited seeing the posters for upcoming
movies as we made our way to the screen. For some reason, I have a particularly vivid
memory of the Pirates of the Caribbean poster (with the skeleton pirate at the ship's
wheel). I imagine we weren't always the best behaved children. I remember running
around and playing in front of the screen and around the seats during the end credits.
My family used to always say "Yay, yay, yay, it's over" after the film. It was an inside joke
because of something my sister used to say after movies when she was little.
I did visit other theaters when I was young, but they were always with my friend Colton
Barney, for birthdays and other special events. I remember watching Harry Potter and
the Sorcerer's Stone with him at Stadium 8 (Sunset) and it was especially exciting
because we got popcorn, something my family never paid for at that time. I also
watched Return of the King with him and his dad in the IMAX in Springdale, which was
an awesome experience.
In 2004 they built a Theater in Hurricane, where we were living. My mom also finished
her nursing degree in the 2000s and my family had more income. From then on we
visited Flood Street less and less. Flood Street Theater closed in 2012. Other theaters
took on the "Dollar Theater" role, but there are none left in Southern Utah after the
Covid 19 Pandemic (this is written in 2024). They were wonderful entertainment options
for less wealthy families and I miss them. The Flood Street Theater is particularly
nostalgic for me and I would love to visit it again. The building is currently used as a
dance school, Westside Studio of Performing Arts.

Conducted by Trevor Cox at the Southern Utah Veterans Home in Ivins, Utah
February 24, 2025

Audio File 1 [Bob Harris – Audio 1 – 2.24.25]

TC – What is your name?
BH – My name is Bob Harris. I was born in Memphis, Tennessee. I lived there most of my life
until I joined the Air Force. After that, I came to St. George, then Nellis Air Force Base for a year
and half and I met this beautiful girl there. So, we got married and been married for 73 years
now.
TC – So, can you tell me a little bit about the places you would visit, the things you would do
here in Washington County and surrounding areas? Places you liked to go?
BH – Well, I’m an outside person. I liked to go camping and hiking and things like that. Take a
tour through the country, or whatever. Did a lot of that. I worked for Tour West, Incorporated.
We took tours down the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River. I did that for 17 years, I guess.
So, I did a lot of outdoors in the area with them.
TC – When did you work with them? Do you remember?
BH – I don’t remember. Probably late 50s, yeah probably late 50s I worked for them and worked
for them for 13 years and took tours down the Grand Canyon, Colorado River, and the Salmon
River in Idaho. Other rivers also. Did a lot of camping outside.
TC – Were there any favorite places for you to go here locally?
BH – Locally?
TC – Yeah, outside and around?
BH – Well, I’m an outdoorsman, so I liked to go do outdoor things, camps and things like that.
Tours that people take to show people who want to know about this country and then the
questions, I’d talk to them about it. I’m not a spokesman, so I can’t necessarily just speak out to
you, you’re gonna have to ask me some questions.
TC – Yeah, you’re fine. So, when you lived here were there any places, like businesses or food
places, you liked to go visit?

BH – A few places I liked to go visit? Outdoors and things like that…can you hold off just a
minute?
[Recording paused and resumed]
TC – So are there any places like stores or businesses or places you used to go visit quite a bit?
BH – Stores, normal places for groceries and thing like that. Way back when, there used to be
Snow’s Park here. I went there many times. But I don’t know exactly a town that has
[unintelligible].
TC – So, how has southern Utah changed in your time here?
BH – Well, it’s grown quite a bit. I’ve been here for many years and I started off with a company
and I worked them for 18 years here and I’ve seen a lot of growth and people coming in all the
time to camp and hike and whatever. So, I’ve done a lot of that and visited a lot of places too. I
don’t know exactly what to tell you.
TC – So, where did you work?
BH – I worked for Tour West, Incorporated. It was a company that took tours down the Colorado
River. I did that for 18 years. Saw a lot of the country, met a lot of nice people, outdoors people,
I mean that’s the kind of thing I like to do. Well, what else?
TC – Whatever, is there anything else you’d want to add or share about southern Utah and
places you’ve been?
BH – Well, southern Utah is a beautiful place. For people that like the outdoors, this is the place
to go. There’s a lot of things to see. From this area here, they’ve got river companies and hiking
companies and tour companies to take people all over to see this part of the country. A lot of
people have not seen this and don’t know exactly what they’re missing, I guess. But, then again
there’s a lot of people that are not interested in this type of thing either. So, hard to say. Hard to
please everyone, I guess, but do what you can, I guess.
TC – Well, thank you Bob.
BH – You’re welcome.
TC – I appreciate it.
[Recording paused and played]
BH – And I helped them see that. When they’d come on these tours, I’d help them quite a bit.
But maybe they don’t know that too, I don’t know.
[End of Audio File 1]

Audio File 2 [Bob Harris – Audio 2 – 2.24.25]

TC – Okay Bob, will you tell us a little bit about your experience playing baseball for Dixie
College?
BH – Sure, I went to Dixie State College way back in the 50s. It was great. I loved it. I loved to
play baseball and to play for them for [unintelligible] league was great, it was a lot of fun. Met a
lot of nice people. Traveled around quite a bit. Saw different parts of the country that I would
never seen if I had not played that, played for the college there. But it was a great. Had a lot of
nice people too, coming from all over the world. It was just interesting to me to do that type of
thing.
TC – What position did you play?
BH – I played third base some and mostly mid-field.
TC – Do you have any memories of any games that you played?
BH – Well, yeah. Back in those days we had a lot of competition with the local people, which is
normal, I guess you’d have anywhere with…it was good. I don’t have anything exceptional to say
about that, but it was interesting and fun. Great activity. Met a lot of nice people. Still friends
with some of them. Not too many…old age is getting to me. It’s been great, I’ve been
[unintelligible].
TC – Can you share any memories about college campus? The old college campus?
BH – Oh, college campus was just an original thing. We had, we played baseball for St. George.
Back in those days it was a pretty limited type thing to do. I don’t know, I don’t know
[unintelligible], I’m not the person you really should be talking to, ‘cause I don’t pronounce too
good.
TC – You’re great.

I remember when my family first moved to St. George from California that we lived on 700 E.
by then Dixie State College in an apartment. We were a family of 6 of Mexican-Americans
who had moved here because my dad started a new job at the Bloomington Country Club. I
remember the apartment was really small, possibly 1 bedroom, and we were a happy bunch
living in close quarters. I only knew Spanish at this time, but I went out into the parking lot
with my sisters and they had made friends with some neighbors that went to school with
them. They were a black family, and we quickly became friends. I remember my first English
words I learned was the cool slang my older siblings and neighbors were saying out in the
parking lot. After this, we moved near 2450 park but I'll never forget my first friends in St.
George and how the same apartment I was growing up in is now specifically student housing
and has been transformed into a campus community.

In February 2004 we moved from the Washington DC suburbs to Washington County.
We rented a home in Central. We drove a dodge neon and a passenger van across the
country with my 9 year old son, one dog, 3 cats, one fish, and one water turtle. We got

memory of
the location:

all the way to Hurricane without incident. On route 9 just outside of Hurricane, the van
got a flat tire. As soon as I pulled over to the side of the road, a man pulled up and
offered to change the tire. It was an unexpected welcome and assurance that we had
come to the right place.
The first year in Central was eventful.
We lived in a house on the border of BLM land on the foot of a hill. In the early spring,
BLM thinned out the pinyon and juniper trees on the hill adjacent to our home as a fire
break. Ironically, they left piles of wood on the hill all spring and summer. One day, I was
returning home from the pool with my son and we saw smoke. As we got closer, we
discovered that the hill by our house was on fire and it was burning down towards our
house. The volunteer firemen arrived but said they couldn’t do anything to fight the fire
until it got on our land. They said that it was against BLM policy for them to do it. I was
panicked to say the least because I was not used to fires being from the east coast. I
thought our house was going to burn down for sure. Then, they told us that our
neighborhood was being evacuated. So, we rounded up all the animals. We took all the
photo albums, my son’s legos, and a laptop. My son’s friend suggested that we should
bless the house which he did. As we left the house, the planes were dropping fire
retardant. I discovered that our area is effective in fighting fires and we were able to
return home that night. Sadly, we had left the swamp cooler on and it was a little smoky
inside but it was a huge relief.
Later in the year, in the winter of 2005, we had a snow storm in Central which left about
10-12 inches of snow on the ground. Then, it rained for about 3 days straight. A new
stream of water started coming off the mountain into our yard. I remember being in
church and telling one of the ladies about the stream and how it was getting bigger and
bigger. She replied with concern, “that is not good.” Then the stream started going
through our basement and garage where we were storing furniture. We had to go move
stuff out of the stream’s way and I used a shop vac to try to get rid of the water.
Eventually, I realized that I needed to go out in the steady rain and dig a ditch to divert
the water around our house. Luckily, that did work.
In the meantime, school just kept going. My son was a fifth grader at Enterprise
Elementary. While at school, his teacher would talk about how the Enterprise reservoir
was going to overflow and how his land was being eroded away.
I was a substitute teacher going to a school in St George when I heard that the governor
declared a state of emergency. I remember thinking this has to be the only place in the
world where there would be a state of emergency and school was not cancelled. I was at
Riverside Elementary that day. Towards the end of the day, the principal was on the
intercom asking if there were any teachers who needed to get over the bridge to get
home. That was me. They sent all of us out. The bridge that I usually took on Riverside
was already closed so they told me how to use the other bridge into Washington. As I
crossed the bridge, I could see that the water was up to the bottom of the bridge and
the police were there to close it down.
Shortly after the flood, our Bishop told us that we would not want to miss stake
conference. Our stake was the St George West Stake which is now the St George North
Stake. I was sitting in the stake center waiting for conference to begin as people around
me started to rise out of their chairs and many were crying. I stood up and could see
that Gordon B Hinckley had entered the building. He was in St George to visit people
who had lost their homes to the flood and came for a brief visit to our conference since
he was there. He said that St George has always been a rough place to live and he didn’t
see why so many people wanted to live here.

April 28-29, 1977 Arizona Strip camping trip for two turns out to be a fun exploration day on the Colorado
River for four
By Loren Webb
When my buddy, Bruce Sullivan, and I went on an overnight camping trip to the Arizona Strip on April 28,
1977, a next day chance encounter with a stranded Dixie College field trip class turned out to offer an
escape outlet for two female class members.
It all began on Friday afternoon, April 28 when I drove my green and white-colored, two-wheel drive 1974
Chevrolet pickup truck from my home on 200 East 600 South to pick up Bruce at Rocky Mountain Company
where he worked as a Wonder Bread delivery truck driver.
I brought him back to his Talbot Apartments’ residence on 600 East directly east of the St. George City
Cemetery where he picked up his camping gear, which included bringing his .270 rifle, a .22 Ruger rifle and a
.22 pistol to shoot rabbits.
We filled up my gas tank for $17.70, then headed south on River Road towards Mt. Trumbull or Bundyville as
locals liked to call it, 65 miles away. Once we reached the Arizona State line, the road turned into gravel and
dirt.
It was rough.
Up to that time in my life, I couldn’t recall a worse stretch of road, particularly the three-mile-long Moki
Dugway with an 11-percent grade.
When we arrived at Mt. Trumbull town, at an elevation of 5,331 feet around 7 p.m., there wasn’t much around
- a few houses that were mostly abandoned, so we kept going south toward the Grand Canyon on a Mohave
County road.
About 10 miles north of the canyon we decided to camp about 9 p.m., along a level spot by the side of the
gravel road surrounded by lava flows. We built a campfire, then cooked up potatoes, hamburger and carrots
in aluminum foil for dinner.
That night, Bruce asked me if I thought there was anyone very close to where we were camped, and I said
there’s probably no one for 20 or 30 miles.
I was wrong.
The next morning, Saturday, April 30, after a breakfast of bacon, eggs and Tang, we packed up and took off
around 9 a.m.
When we got within about 1 ½ miles from Whitmore Canyon point, 40 miles south of Mt. Trumbull town, we
caught sight of what looked like a stalled vehicle along with another vehicle parked nearby.
I said to Bruce, “I’ll bet you anything that it’s somebody we or I know, and sure enough, it was!
We met Dr. Andrew Barnum, Dixie College natural sciences professor, and his field biology class of students.
They had also left Friday morning from St. George and camped overnight near the top of Whitmore Canyon.
While returning to St. George, Barnum’s four-wheel-drive Dodge truck quit and wouldn’t start up again. Along
with Dr. Barnum, nine students were on the field trip.
Andrew Barnum, Dixie College Natural Sciences Professor, whose truck stalled in Whitmore Canyon on April
29, 1977. 1977 Confederate Yearbook.
They had another four-wheel drive Jeep that student Karen Walbom was driving, but they didn’t have any
chains, and of course, neither did we, so Karen Walbom, driving the Jeep, took off with four students to go
for help into St. George or try to get somebody to help along the way.
Meanwhile, the remaining four students figured it was going to be a long time before they would get back

home, so two of the college students, Kay Lynn Kendall and Tarryl Anderson, said they wouldn’t mind going
back down to the Colorado River with us (where Barnum’s group had earlier participated in mud fights on the
sandbar and caught a rattlesnake) and go swimming.
So, Bruce and I took Kay Lynn and Tarryl in my truck and headed down the road into Whitmore Canyon, since
Bruce and I wanted to see the river as well. At the end of the road in the canyon, I parked the truck and we
got out and walked down a rocky dirt path to the Colorado River where we went swimming.
Bruce and I took off our shoes and socks and our shirts, but kept our garments and pants on. The water was
pretty cold but invigorating. It was so much fun splashing around in the water and talking and laughing, and
then listening to the sounds of the river as it flowed down the canyon.
While we were drying off, three guys in three separate canoes floated down the river, then two guys in
separate kayaks also floated by.
We talked to the two kayakers for a while and learned that they operated a business out of Hurricane.
The four of us then started back up the trail to the truck, taking pictures along the way, then drove up the
steep lava road headed towards home. When we got where the other truck had stalled, the Dodge truck and
Jeep were both gone.
We learned later that about 10 minutes after we left sight of Dr. Barnum’s truck that Jeep driver Karen
Walbom, and those riding with her, ran into a man named Leo Prisbrey who was headed south and he
produced a chain they could use. So the Jeep retraced its path back to the stalled Dodge truck. Students
then hooked onto Barnum’s truck and towed it 85 miles back to St. George.
Dixie College student Karen Walbom, participating in a college biology field trip led by Dr. Andrew Barnum,
went for help to find a tow chain to tow Dr. Barnum’s stalled vehicle back into St. George. 1977 Confederate
Yearbook.
On our way back, we stopped in Main Street Valley to visit an abandoned two-story wooden cabin and take a
few pictures. I then hopped back into the driver’s seat of my truck, Tarryl climbed into the middle seat and
Bruce took the passenger seat. Kay Lynn willingly rode in the rear truck bed all the way home to St. George
where we arrived at 5 p.m.
After I dropped off Kay Lynn and Tarryl at their apartments, then dropped off Bruce at his apartment, the first
thing I did was take the truck to a car wash and wash and clean it.
As I reflected on what transpired that weekend, I thought how a great camping trip with one of my best
friends, Bruce Sullivan, was made even better by enjoying the unexpected female company of Dixie College
students Kay Lynn Kendall and Tarryl Anderson, who helped us share in our enjoyment of the magnificent
Colorado River in Whitmore Canyon, along with the rugged beauty of the remote Arizona Strip.

Pine Valley Trail Crew memories
By Loren Webb
My experiences working as a seasonal employee on the Pine Valley Mountain trail crew of the Pine Valley
Ranger District, Dixie National Forest, U.S. Forest Service during the summer of 1976 and 1977 were
memorable because of the opportunity to work closely with one supervisor and a few other co-workers in
the rugged backcountry beauty of Pine Valley Mountain’s Summit Trail network.
I kept no journal of my work during the summer of 1976. What I remember of that summer is that I worked
directly under Trail Crew Supervisor Norm Blake and with co-worker DelRoy Ruesch.
We worked out of the Pine Valley Ranger District office, located in the Federal Building, 196 East Tabernacle
in St. George. My overall supervisor was District Ranger Rance Rollins and the office manager was Marilyn
Squires.
If I remember right, I was hired as a GSA 3 employee with a starting salary of $3.03 an hour, which I thought
was a pretty good summer wage back then.
I reported to the Pine Valley Work Center, 132 East Center Street in Pine Valley on Monday morning. And
most weeks, the three of us would saddle up Forest Service horses kept at the Work Center and head up
various trails that accessed Pine Valley Mountain. I was assigned to ride “Blackie,” a dark-colored quarter
horse.
We carried pruners for pruning overhanging tree limbs on Forest Service trails. We also carried pulaskis that
looked like an axe on one end and a hoe on the other end. We used these to chop larger bushes or branches
and to move rocks that impeded Forest Service trails.
Norm Blake, who also owned a ranch on the Arizona Strip, also used pack horses that carried metal
panniers for transporting all of our food for the week we would be on Pine Valley Mountain, along with dutch
ovens, gas-powered chain saws, two-stroke fuel and chaps when operating the chain saw. The panniers also
carried grain for the horses, along with metal hobbles for hobbling the horses at camp so they would not run
off. The panniers also carried our tents and sleeping bags for sleeping overnight on the mountain. DelRoy
and I wore long or short-sleeved shirts, denim pants and hiking shoes with Vibram soles.
Usually, on Monday morning, Norm would go shopping at the Snow IGA store at 37 East 100 North (St.
George Boulevard), buying bacon, eggs, and hash browns for breakfast, lunch meat and bread for lunch, and
steak, hamburger, potatoes, carrots, onions and other vegetables for dinner. The supplies needed to last the
three to four nights we would be working on the mountain.
We would then set out for some section of the vast Summit Trail system on Pine Valley Mountain.
Many times we would stay at either Further Water, Whipple Valley or Anderson Valley where we would set up
camp, let the hobbled horses graze and Norm would cook up a steak or hamburger dinner.
Many times, DelRoy and I would clear trails on foot. Other times, when we needed to get to a camp site by
evening, we pruned overhead tree branches while riding on horses. We wore hard hat helmets for protection
from falling rocks or tree branches or whenever we removed dead and down brush or when Norm used
explosives to loosen up rock formations that impeded trail access.
During the first part of the summer, Norm, DelRoy and I worked to improve the Forsythe Trail. I also worked
with Norm Blake, Dan Talbot and Craig Hafen the following summer of 1977 along various sections of the
same trail.
Because it was so rocky and slick, especially for horses, Norm received permission for us to drill large holes
in rocks scattered above and to the west side of a stream bed. Once we had drilled the holes using a gaspowered drill, Norm, who was a licensed explosives expert with the U.S. Forest Service, walked to each of
the drilled holes and put in plastic explosives. He then told DelRoy and myself to take the horses several
hundred yards up the canyon so we would be clear and protected when he set off the explosives.

Then we heard him yell some kind of warning, such as “Fire in the hole,” and then a huge explosion sent
rocks flying in all directions.
Our next task was to move all of the broken rock and smooth out a trail that horses and hikers could use
afterwards.
When we encountered downed aspen or ponderosa pine trees on the trail, Norm would take out the chain
saw and within a half hour to 45 minutes, he had the tree cut up so that DelRoy and I could remove the cut
off logs from off the trail, and we could proceed to the next downed tree obstruction. We were allowed to
use the chain saws on the mountain because this was prior to Pine Valley being designated a Wilderness
Area by Congress in 1984.
Because we were on the mountain for most of the week, and were isolated from the rest of the world, I
decided to pack a large transistor radio in one of the saddlebags on my horse. I usually listened to the radio
station KSUB in Cedar City, since that station seemed to be heard all over Pine Valley Mountain.
Some of the top hits in 1976 were “If You Leave Me Now,” by Chicago, “Silly Love Songs” by Wings, “Don’t Go
Breaking My Heart” by Elton John and Kiki Dee, “December 1963” by the Four Seasons, “New Kid in Town,”
by the Eagles and “Afternoon Delight” by the Starland Vocal Band .
In 1977, some of the hits were “Torn Between Two Lovers,” by Mary MacGregor, and “Southern Nights” by
Glen Campbell. Country hits in 1976 were “I'm a Stand by My Woman Man” by Ronnie Milsap, and “Let Your
Love Flow” by the Bellemy Brothers. Other Country hits in 1977 were “It Was Almost Like a Song” by Ronnie
Milsap and “Luckenbach, Texas” by Waylon Jennings, that I remember listening to.
Usually, we were on the mountain until Thursday evening when we came off the mountain so that I could
participate in an LDS softball game in St. George that usually started either at 8 or 9:15 p.m., on a ball field
west of Dixie High School or at the Elks Field at 250 East and 100 South (where Legacy Elementary School
is now located).
Then I would drive back to Pine Valley and arrive at the Work Center by 8 a.m. and usually help with cleaning
restrooms and making other improvements in the Pine Valley Recreation Area throughout the day. DelRoy
and I usually worked under the supervision of Clifford Dean, a Dixie College professor, who worked summers
for the Forest Service.
We also might do trail maintenance work that was close to Pine Valley and then quit at 4:30 p.m. after
taking a half hour lunch.
On nights I didn’t have a softball game, I would stay overnight in the Forest Service cabin located directly
north of the Pine Valley Reservoir. A paved road from the main road into the Pine Valley Recreation Area led
to the one-room ranger cabin, (located just north of the Pine Valley Reservoir), which had no electrical
power. I loved this cabin. During the early evening, I would take a sleeping bag and spread it out on the front
outside covered porch. I would then sit on top of it while reading a book (such as the Life of Heber C.
Kimball by Orson F. Whitney). I would read until it got dark, then I would go inside, turn on the propane
lantern and read for another hour before going to bed around 10 p.m. I got a number of books read using
this format.
Sometimes, in the evening, there would be these tremendous lightning and thunderstorms in Pine Valley that
would last for several hours. The lightning would light up the entire valley and the thunder storms would
ricochet and reverberate down through the valley so loudly that it was deafening, at times.
I loved it.
I remember also helping to erect barbed wire fencing under Norm’s expert guidance somewhere near Gray’s
Ranch and Grass Valley.
Trails we maintained on the Pine Valley Ranger District during the summer of 1976 and 1977 included
Gardner Peak Trail, Whipple Valley Trail, Brown’s Point Trail to Summit Trail, Water Canyon Trail, Mill Flat
Trail, White Rocks Trail, Forsythe Trail, Blake-Gubler Trail, Anderson Valley Trail, New Harmony Trail, Browse
Trail, Wet Sandy Trail, Oak Grove Trail, and Dan Spring Trail, among others.
My first year with the Forest Service, I was also called out on Sunday morning, July 25, 1976 by Forest
Service supervisor Benton Smith with the Pine Valley Ranger District office to go to a forest fire on Pine

Valley Mountain. He told us we would only be out during the day and that we wouldn’t need any sleeping
bags or tents.
How wrong that prediction turned out to be!
We didn’t get the fire out until late in the evening. Because we had no sleeping bags or tents or extra food,
we had to keep a campfire going throughout the night to keep warm and we resorted to putting horse
blankets over us for warmth. Luckily, Jerry (Gerald) Smith, who was over Special Uses in the Forest, had one
granola bar he shared with the rest of us by breaking it into several pieces.
Overall, it was a miserable night, and my Trail Maintenance Supervisor Norm Blake had warned that we
should have taken the extra supplies. But Benton Smith didn’t listen.
I never wanted to go on another fire with Benton Smith.
I believe there was one more time we had to go on another fire on Pine Valley Mountain. It was about 10
p.m.,when we started down the mountain on our horses. It was pretty dark and you could barely see the
trail. We let our horses find their way down off the mountain which took about two hours to get back down
to the valley floor.
Then either the evening of Aug. 6, or the early morning hours of Aug. 7, 1976, I was notified by Pine Valley
Ranger District office manager Marilyn Squires that I was needed on a large forest fire in northern Utah.
She instructed me that I needed to travel to Enterprise to meet my Forest Service supervisor Morris Dannelly
to travel in school buses or government buses to Mona, Utah to fight a forest fire. About 40 of us from the
Dixie National Forest arrived in Mona at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7, 1976. We were to be housed at a fire
camp at Mona City Park where we were to be fed and bed down for the night.
The next morning, Sunday, Aug. 8, 1976 at 6 a.m., we were transported by bus to a base camp located on
the east side of Interstate 15 where four helicopters were used to airlift myself and others from the
mountain base to the fire burning out of control between 5,000 and 8,000 foot elevations.
I remember that helicopter ride well.
Those of us on that ride were flown to an outcropped landing area on the side of the mountain. Because the
helicopter shook so much because of heavy wind currents, my legs were shaking pretty bad by the time I got
dropped off. Then the next several hours were spent using a pulaski, cutting up burning debris and putting
out hot spots. Later in the afternoon, after gaining control of the fire, we exhaustedly sat down and looked
out over the valley and Interstate 15.
According to a Salt Lake Tribune Sunday, Aug. 8, 1976 news article, “Six bulldozers were also used to battle
the fire’s lower portion.
The fire, which started Friday, Aug. 6, 1976 at 4:30 p.m., in the Mona garbage dump, was aided by 35 mile
per hour wind, which raced east of the Mona City limits to the mountains and canyons of the rough and
steep terrain of Mt. Nebo.
By Saturday afternoon, it had consumed 745 acres of private and state land and 295 acres of the Uinta
National Forest, forest officials said.
In the Mona fire’s extremely rough terrain, which supports elk and deer herds and is a major nesting area for
eagles and hawks, the fire’s perimeter had to be worked by men with shovels and axes.
Marvin Newell of the Ashley National Forest, who was manning the Mona fire camp headquarters on
Saturday, Aug. 7, 1976, said there were 155 smokejumpers in service, including the 40 of us who arrived that
afternoon from the Dixie National Forest. Smokejumpers were pulled in from the Wasatch, Ashley, MantiLaSal, Fishlake, Boise, Sawtooth and Payette national forests as well as 20 smokejumpers from Region 1 in
Missoula, Mont.and McCall, Idaho, plus three air tankers, including a B-17, B-26 and C-119 carrying fire
retardant from the Salt Lake Airport, assisted fighting the fire on Mt. Nebo’s west slope.
On Friday, Aug. 6, the day the fire began, fire fighters came from the Juab County Sheriff’s Jeep Patrol, the
Utah Highway Patrol and volunteer fire departments of Nephi, Mona, Santaquin, Payson and Goshen.
At the peak of the fire fighting effort, some 220 firefighters battled the blaze on Mt. Nebo, and I was one of
