THE FINANCING OF THE ST. GEORGE STAKE

ACADEMY ESTABLISHED SEPTEMBER 19, 1911

The bringing into being of the St. George Stake Academy, was the crystallization of all the intellectual hopes and dreams of the settlers of Dixie.

They began to cultivate the minds of men from the very first, by the way of the drama, the Dance, and Community Parties, held in the Boweries, and halls erected by the people in a veritable wave of building and construction. No piece of construction, no building, seemed too heavy, or vast for these early settlers. They had come to build a commonwealth for a people whose power of growth was limited only by the universe. Such ideas as these were implanted in them by the great faith they had espoused. They worshipped a God who had but recently revealed himself to man, one who taught a doctrine of Eternal Progression, and a Glory limited only by one’s earthly attainments, and made attainable by the Ligh of the Spirit, obtainable only by, and through Heavenly endowments, bestowed by God’s Servants upon this earth.

In the light of the teachings and powers inherent in this new, and wonderful organization, men moved with the precission, and courage of trained soldiers. Orders to them were but part of the Order of the Day. They went where called. And began in every instance to build permanent homes, farms, schools, stores, and industries of every kind, as they found them adapted to the country. And when the roads were made passable, and the ditches so they would carry water from spring and stream, they at once turned to the greater and more permanent task of educating the mind and spirit of man. Seeking to lay the foundation for man’s

[-PAGE 11-]

development of mind, heart, and spirit, that he might in time become fit companion and associate for eternal beings whose eye beheld all, knew all, and exercised control over all.

Their hearts ever longed for the opportunities which the world had for learning, and which they were denied for Conscience Sake. Far away in the quiet of the desert, under the shadows of great mountain ranges, under the silent stars, listening in the hush of night to the rustle of the fragrant sage, and murmuring of the pines and cedars, they put their trust in that God they had so recently come to worship and to know, and adding prayers to their dreams and hopes, they sought His guidance and blessing in all that they should do, and under the spell of their great faith, selfishness vanished from their hearts, and again a new race was born. One which should again carry the name of the One God to a glory over-shadowing all that had been done by the people of Israel, and make his name great throughout every nation, and hallowed by every tongue and people to dwell upon the earth.

Their hearts and their spirits were now prepared for the work of evangelizing the whole world, – they lacked but one thing–The education of the Intellect. They worked like a Hive of Bees bringing in to their midst information and learning from all over the world. It was not long before men of learning found them in possession of knowledge equal to, and often in advance of theirs. Men of culture coming into their midst had no reason to be ashamed of them, for they had that gentleness of spirit, and that culture of the heart, that made them fit companions of people of every social station in life. The Brotherhood of Man was growing in their very being, and their Goal was All-Wisdom, and Intelli-

gence Bounded Only by the Universe. God was developing a New Leaven, which in time is to Leaven the Whole Lump. The world was to be their Field, and the people their Harvest. God planted in their hearts the Highest Ideal, and they, by their faith, have bent every energy to Make that Ideal Real.

Behind these Dixie Pioneers was thirty years of this Intensive Training, and they held true to their teachings, never once losing sight of their guiding star, He who gave all, even his life for a ransom, that his fellow man might live, both now, and eternally. Which Everlasting Life is based upon his knowing the Truth, and knowing that Truth, he is made free of all his enemies, even Death.

Step by step these hardy and noble minded men built a culture which will ever stand unsurpassed, perhaps never equalled, by any community similarly situated; bringing in now and then some superior teacher from larger center. These men and women did much to place our people in the superior scale they occupied in education and the drama, and which they have held so long.

But their life’s dream, and their Heart’s longing was not fully realized until the men of our time reached out after rainbow of their father’s Hopes and Dreams, and bringing forth the Golden Treasure so long concealed under that Radiant Bow, they established the Dixie Academy.

The man who lead these earnest men in this last Dash for the seemingly unattainable, was Edward H. Snow, then President of the St. George Stake, and the one who had the keenest insight into the possibilities of this Dixie Land, and the broadest and most Far seeing Vision as to the development and Culture of its people.

His greatest lieutenants were Thomas P. Cottam, George F.

Whitehead, James Andrus, Joseph Orton, Charles F. Foster, F. J. Woodbury, Chas. W. Seegmiller, Jas. B. Bracken, George T. Cottam, W. B. Baker, Jos. T. Atkin, and Seth A. Pymm. A number of these men aided by splendid gifts, establishing departments of various kinds in the then Academy. Some had made great gifts in the work of the construction of the Academy. And all had given their very HEARTS to the work. God has said “Son Give Me Thine Heart”, and they knowing this gave in very deed their Heart, and with the heart, gave also a great part of their Life’s Devotion to this work of Culture for their fellows. It is said that some of these have gone on. Yes, their fleshly presence has passed from our sight. But their memories will live in the hearts of men and women from far and near. The participants of their generosity and untiring labors–the students of this grand institution–will drift into every land and clime, and the manhood, courage, zeal, energy, and character, which they stand for, will bring everlasting honor upon the memories of these men, who builded even better than they knew. And the Culture for which they so firmly stood, will shine forth in the lives of the thousands who will go forth from the Halls of Good Old Dixie College. The world knows some of them know, and not long hence, the world of research, discovery, and learning will feel the influence and power of this well-founded, firmly based, rock-ribbed institution. For it was founded upon the spirit of

Love for their Fellow-Man

An Insatiable Desire for Knowledge, and

Social Welfare.

Under these great and glorious influences the people rose to a man, and dug deep into their savings, and earnings. The worker gave liberally of his time, and thousands were raised willingly,

and quickly. The Church came in and gave its thousands, and the task was done, insurmountable as it had seemed.

Many gave their time and their means so unassumingly that they are today unhonored and unsung, but they shall not be wholly forgotten, for their children’s children shall reap the benefit of the gifts. And the Widow’s Mite has been a theme of Divine praise these 1900 years.

And one day The Cry Went Forth”--”It is Finished”, and we have ever since gathered honors and rewards from the labors of these Men Who Dared to Attempt the – Well, Nigh Impossible.
